Youth Tour

Kay Electric is giving eight area high school juniors the opportunity to win trips to Washington, D.C., Steamboat Springs, Colo., or cash prizes.  The two trips are all expenses paid and are truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. KEC has participated in the National Rural Electric Youth Tour Program since the early 1960s.

Each year, KEC has an essay contest for area juniors. The students are asked to write a 500-word essay over a specific topic. This year’s topic: What do you see as the biggest challenges that the electric utilities will face in our future and why.

KEC will have all the essay’s judged by a third party and the top eight will be asked to attend the annual Youth Tour Banquet in March. The top eight students will be asked to present their essays in speech form and answer a few electric cooperative questions from a panel of judges.

Once concluded, the top two students will represent KEC at Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. June 9-15, 2017; second place student’s will receive an all expense paid trip to Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp in Steamboat Springs, Colo. July 14-20, 2017; third and fourth place students will receive cash prizes.

Participants must be a high school junior and attend a school within KEC’s service territory. You do not have to be a member of KEC.  Essays are due Friday, Feb. 17, 2017 by 5pm.

Area Eighth graders wanting to participate in our YouthPower competition are asked to write a 250 word, double spaced essay on the topic, “Why Kay Electric should choose you for this honor. What makes you the best choice and how attending this Energy Camp would benefit you.”

The essays are judged by an independent panel on command of subject, strength of ideas, style and grammar. KEC will notify the top four boys and the top four girls and reward them with a trip to Energy Camp at Canyon Camp in Hinton, Okla. May 30 – June 2, 2017.

Energy Campers have the chance to participate in leadership activities, experience first-hand the exciting world of rural electrification, enjoy a dance and visit Celebration Station in Oklahoma City.

Essay deadline for both programs is 5 p.m. Friday, February 17, 2017. If you have any questions please call Youth Tour Coordinator Cyndi Mitchell at 1-800-535-1079 or e-mail or visit
