2022 Essay Contest

Kay Electric has participated in the National Rural Electric Youth Tour Program since the early 1960’s, but because COVID-19 has created so many unknowns and risks, KEC has opted to keep our students safe and offer scholarships and cash prizes instead.

Kay Electric is giving all area high school juniors the opportunity to win a scholarship or cash prizes.  Two $2,500 scholarships and two $2,000 scholarships will be awarded to the top four winners on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 along with cash prizes for the other four contestants.  The students are asked to write a 500-600 typed essay over these specific topics:

“What are the advantages of receiving electric service from a cooperative compared with an investor owned utility?”

“How the availability of electric service improves the quality of life in Rural Oklahoma?”

“Interview a Cooperative Member who remembers when they received power for the first time.”

KEC will have all the essay’s judged by a third party and the top eight will be asked to attend an interview by three judges and answer a few electric cooperative questions on Tuesday, February 22, 2022.

Once concluded, the top four students will win a scholarship and the other four students will win a cash prize.

Participants must be a high school junior and attend a school within KEC’s service territory or homeschooled.  You do not have to be a member of KEC to enter.  Essays are due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 14, 2022.

Area Eighth graders wanting to participate in an essay contest are asked to write a 300 word, double spaced essay on “How has reliable electricity benefited you and your community throught the COVID-19 pandemic?”  All of the essays are judged by an independent panel on command of subject, strength of ideas, style and grammar.  KEC will notify the top six students and reward them with a Chromebook.

Essay deadline for both contests is 5 p.m. Friday, January 14, 2022. If you have any questions please call Cyndi Mitchell at 1-800-535-1079 or e-mail cmitchell@kayelectric.coop.
