2023 Essay Contest

Kay Electric has participated in the National Rural Electric Youth Tour Program since the early 1960’s, and is pleased to continue this tradition into 2023.

Kay Electric is giving eight area high school juniors the opportunity to win a trip to Washington D.C. on the NRECA Youth Tour, or to Steamboat Springs, CO for Leadership Camp or a cash prize.  There will be two trips to Washington D.C. and two trips to Steamboat Springs awarded to the top four winners on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 along with cash prizes for the other four contestants.  The students are asked to write a 500-600 typed essay over an EV related topic (See application form for more details).

KEC will have all the essay’s judged by a third party and the top eight will be asked to attend an interview by three judges and answer a few electric cooperative questions on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 followed by a celebration banquet.

Participants must be a high school junior and attend a school within KEC’s service territory.  You do not have to be a member of KEC to enter.  Essays are due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 13, 2023.

Area Eighth graders wanting to participate in an essay contest are asked to write a 300-word, double spaced essay on an EV related topic (See application form for more details).  All of the essays are judged by an independent panel on command of subject, strength of ideas, style and grammar.  KEC will notify the top six students and reward them with a trip to Canyon Camp near the beautiful Red Rock Canyon just south of Hinton, OK for Energy Camp, May 30 - June 2 where they'll experience first-hand the exciting world of rural electricity, watch safety demonstrations, climb a pole, watch a cooperative crew at work as well as have some awesome outdoor summer fun and make a lot of new friends from across the state.
